NEW LENOX, IL - In recent days a number of people who live around New Lenox or were passing through this community found themselves being handcuffed and taken for a ride to the Will County Adult Detention Facility about seven miles away. Some are accused of domestic violence. Others were wanted by police in neighboring states. One man was apparently trying to steal packages being delivered by UPS drivers.

Randy Studzinski, 41, unit block of Tremont Road, Fox Lake, arrested by New Lenox police officers on two misdemeanor charges of domestic battery. Studzinski was booked into the county jail at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. According to New Lenox police, officers responded to a call of domestic violence at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday in the 200 block of Willow. Police say that Studzinski's 32-year-old woman, also from Fox Lake, suffered cuts to her forehead. According to Deputy Police Chief Louis Alessandrini, officers determined that Studzinski punched his girlfriend in the head during an argument at the house in New Lenox. Police said the couple did not reside there. The victim was taken by ambulance to the nearby Silver Cross Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

After two days in jail, Studzinski was released from detention Monday night.

Tolbert Windham, 38, of Harvey is charged with two felony counts related to identity theft. He was taken into custody late Thursday night in the 700 block of Joliet Highway. According to New Lenox police, a UPS driver suspected that Windham was committing identity fraud. Windham ran up to the UPS driver and asked for a package, police said. Windham even showed the UPS driver a driver's license with a New Lenox address on it. Police say it was a fake.

"The driver knew that Windham did not live at the address on the ID and called police," a police report stated. New Lenox police car quickly located Windham and pulled him over. The defendant also had no proof of insurance and a suspended license, police said.

Alessandrini said it's a common scam for identity thieves to create fake identification cards as the 38-year-old Harvey man is suspected of doing.

"On this case, the driver for UPS was onto the (scam) and called police and we located this guy in the area. We're glad the UPS driver alerted us to it. Obviously that was key in making this arrest," Alessandrini said.
